Protective status of grey wolves set to expire by the end of the year.
President Trump’s administration announced earlier this week that it is aiming to delist grey wolves from the endangered species list by the end of 2020. Aurelia Skipwith, the Director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, expressed that the Interior Department was “working hard to have this done by the end of the year and I’d say it’s very imminent.”
Originally, the grey wolf population was hunted, poisoned, and trapped to near extinction in the 1900s. The wolves were harmful to farm animals and human safety. However, the wolves are important to maintaining local ecosystems. In recent decades, the populations have rebounded and have a total population of over 6,000 animals.
